Dear Friends,

Apart from biological stressors, People Living with HIV (PLHIV) encounter several psychosocial stressors. Thus PLHIV face multiple challenges in maintaining their psychological well-being.

The third phase of India’s National AIDS Control Programme (NACP-III) acknowledges the need for psychosocial support for PLHIV. The NACP-III envisages extending psychosocial support through different initiatives like the Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTC), Community Care Centres (CCC), and the Link Workers.

I am living with HIV for the last 10 years and have worked with projects in different roles. Based on some of my experiences, I have often felt that mental health issues of PLHIV did not receive adequate attention in the national programme. Members of Solution Exchange have been highlighting the importance of psychosocial support for PLHIV, especially during the recent consultations like the Mid Term Review (MTR) of NACP-III, and the National Composite Policy Index (NCPI). In addition, members have expressed concerns regarding psychosocial support and mental health services accessible to PLHIV.

In this context, I would like to know from your experience, the following:
What are the mental health issues faced by PLHIV? To what extent are the existing care centres, and support systems successful in addressing these issues?

Which are the aspects of the current national programme that promote mental health of PLHIV, and which are the ones that require improvement?
Which are the institutions and organisations engaged in Mental Health and Psychosocial support for PLHIV? What are their programmes and research activities?

I request all members of Solution Exchange to come forward and share experiences. Your contributions will help me with the preparation of an advocacy paper I am currently working on.

Thanking You,

With Best Wishes,

Snehansu Bhaduri,
